Changing Tires with the Seasons.

Posted on

In need of new tires for the new season? Call Waldorf Chevy today!

At the Tire Shop

It’s 4pm on a Friday afternoon and you’re in line at the tire shop anxiously awaiting the enormous bill that you’re about to incur. “Next!” yells out the middle-aged service writer, motioning from amongst a whirlwind of paperwork, for you to come to the counter. At the counter you tell the service writer that you need four new tires and he asks you “Summer, winter, all-season?” and it dawns on you at that moment that you’re totally unprepared for this question. “There’s a difference in tires?” you think to yourself, and your mind begins to wonder how you’ve gone so long not knowing there were different tires, let alone what those differences are. Being in a position like this isn’t all that uncommon, unless you’re a car enthusiast or a mechanic yourself, chances are you were never told about the differences in tire compounds and why there is even a need for different tires. They say you learn something new every day, and today’s lesson is on the various tire compounds and their specific uses, so buckle in and come along for the ride.

Different Tires, for Different Seasons

Both the summer and winter are filled with their own unique wonders and magical times, but also filled with their own unique challenges at the same time. Winter can be cold, harsh, and unforgiving, both to humans and machines alike. While the summer may not come with ice and snow like winter, it can still be host to poor or dangerous driving conditions just like winter is. With the winter and summer being total opposites, it makes sense that there isn’t just one tire to handle both seasons. Tire manufacturers nowadays have tire offerings in three different categories, Summer, Winter and All-Season, each boasting their own advantages and disadvantages. Now you may be wondering, why not just buy all-season tires for all the seasons? Stick around and read about why all-season tires aren’t necessarily for all of the seasons, and why winter tires should be kept to colder temperatures.

Summer Tires

Summer tires are excellent dry and wet condition tires in warmer weather, making them perfectly suited for rainy summer evenings and sweltering hot afternoons. In order to gain superior traction and handling that summer tires are known for, they were designed with less grooving for water clearance and even have a more streamlined tread pattern which increases the amount of tire in contact with the road, ultimately providing better traction. On top of the increased traction and handling, summer tires also boast better fuel economy due to their reduced rolling resistance. While summer tires are great because of their increased traction and handling, the technology used to achieve those results ends up being detrimental to the car and driver if driven in cold weather conditions. Because of the summer tires’ streamlined tread design, they become much more brittle in cold weather and therefore are considered unsafe in winter driving conditions. Purchase your summer tires and have them mounted and balanced at Waldorf Chevy, then hit the roads in confidence with your new tires.

Winter Tires

Cold weather brings a plethora of problems, from snowfall shutting down roads to black ice causing accidents, the winter is no joke. That is why it’s imperative to head into every winter prepared for the challenges the cold weather forces you to encounter daily. One way to fight back against the cold, cruel beast that is winter is with winter tires. Winter tires are designed with more natural rubber in the tire compound, allowing the tire to maintain flexibility even in temperatures below freezing. In addition to the unique rubber compounding, winter tires boast more aggressive tread patterns that help dig into the snow and ice, providing traction and handling without having to stud the tire. While winter tires are great in cold weather, it’s not a great idea to keep them on during the warmer months as the softer rubber compound will cause accelerated wear and tear of the tire and pose handling and traction issues as well. After running winter tires during the cold weather months, make sure to switch off to a good summer tire or a set of all-season tires. Before winter sneaks up on you, make sure to drop by Waldorf Chevy Service Center to get your winter tires and winter car servicing.

All-Season Tires

All-season tires means they can be used in all seasons right? Unfortunately, that is a common misconception amongst drivers today, with most drivers believing they can run one set of all-season tires year-round with no issues. While all-season tires sound like they can do it all, they really just excel at being mediocre in all seasons. With winter tires sporting extra rubber to maintain a softer compound for the cold weather conditions, and summer tires boasting a stiffer tire that provides better traction in warm weather, all-seasons take a bit of inspiration from both which results in a hybridized version of summer and winter tires. All-season tires sacrifice a bit of the warm and wet weather traction in favor of being able to grip in ice and snow, making them a great choice for those that live in climates that don’t drop below freezing often or if at all. The true way to determine if an all-season tire is the right tire for you is to base it off of your local climate, a very neutral climate area is the best place to use all-season tires in. If you’re looking for a great middle ground between summer and winter tires, purchasing all-season tires at Waldorf Chevy located in Waldorf, MD, is a great option.

Which Tire is Best for Me?

Choosing a tire seemed simple before all of this info, right? While there are many factors that go into purchasing a tire, you don’t have to be an expert to make a choice, as our parts experts at Waldorf Chevy will guide you in choosing the right tire for your vehicle. In order to make it a little easier to select a tire, consider your climate and daily driving conditions first, then make sure to stop in at Waldorf Chevy to speak with a parts professional and order the tires today!

Cadillac Pays Homage to ‘Edward Scissorhands’ in New Ad Featuring All-Electric LYRIQ

Posted on

Cadillac’s electric future is illuminated with a “slice” of nostalgia from Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” universe, in a new commercial debuting in the fourth quarter of this year’s big game.

The new spot stars Timothée Chalamet, as Edward Scissorhands’ son, Edgar, and Winona Ryder, reprising her role as Kim, who is also Edgar’s mother.

“It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years,” said Tim Burton, who directed the original 1990 film and approved the concept for the new ad. “I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world! I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.”

In the spot, Edgar, who has inherited his father’s shears for hands, finds many of life’s tasks difficult. To make them a little easier, Kim presents him with a new Cadillac LYRIQ — the brand’s first all-electric vehicle. Not only does he have his own transportation, but the LYRIQ is also equipped with the Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance feature, allowing him to confidently let go of the wheel when the system is engaged, and the vehicle is on an enabled road.

“We love the creative concept of Super Cruise and the LYRIQ opening up Edgar’s world and bringing confidence to his daily life,” said Melissa Grady, Cadillac chief marketing officer. “At a time when people are looking for an escape from the challenges of the past year, it was a privilege to revisit the beloved story of Edward Scissorhands in a fresh, modern way and showcase Cadillac’s electric future during the biggest game of the year.”

Super Cruise will be available on the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, CT4 and CT5, as well as the upcoming LYRIQ. It is the only system that provides true hands-free driving on more than 200,000 miles of enabled roads in the U.S. and Canada. Recent enhancements include Lane Change on Demand functionality, which will allow the hands-free system to change lanes on the highway when requested by the driver and certain conditions are met.

As the brand’s first all-electric vehicle, the all-new LYRIQ will lead Cadillac’s charge over the next decade to redefine American luxury with a new portfolio of EVs, while also establishing a leadership position through new thresholds of technology integration. LYRIQ is driven by GM’s all-new modular Ultium platform, offering a GM-estimated range of more than 300 miles on a full charge2.

In addition to Super Cruise, LYRIQ’s technology integration will include a massive 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED display and a customizable user interface3 designed to deliver a flexible, high-end user experience3. Cadillac LYRIQ will go into production in the first half of 2022.

The V-Series Blackwing models will be the first GM production vehicles with 3D-printed parts, including a unique medallion on the manual shifter knob.

Cadillac’s introduction of the new 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing will also mark the revival of one of the most popular features for driving enthusiasts – the manual transmission. These manual transmissions were produced using new additive manufacturing applications that will bring 3D-printed parts into the upcoming ultra-high-performance sedans.

The V-Series Blackwing models will be the first GM production vehicles with functional 3D-printed parts, including two HVAC ducts and an electrical harness bracket. In addition, a unique 3D-printed medallion will sit on the manual shifter knob. By leveraging additive manufacturing, the Cadillac team was able to reduce costs and waste when developing the manual transmission.

“A lot of work went into making the manual possible in both vehicles. It’s something we know V-Series buyers want and it’s something we knew we had to have, so we used innovative processes to make it happen,” said Mirza Grebovic, Cadillac performance variant manager. “There are a few ways to really get that connected feel with the vehicle and the manual transmission is probably the most obvious one.”

Both the CT4-V Blackwing and the CT5-V Blackwing will come standard with a six-speed manual transmission and offer a 10-speed automatic transmission as an option. The CT4-V Blackwing will be the only sedan in its segment to offer a manual.

This six-speed manual transmission is both quieter and more durable than the previous generation.

The Current Manual Market

In a recent Harris Poll study conducted on behalf of Cadillac about the current knowledge and adoption of the manual transmission found:

  • Sixty-six percent of American adults surveyed know how to drive a manual.
  • Of those who do not know how to drive a manual, roughly 40 percent are either somewhat or very interested in learning.
  • More than half (55 percent) of American adults say they have owned or leased a car with a manual transmission.
  • Interest in driving or learning to drive a manual is higher among those with $75,000 or more in annual household income (64 percent interested) and those between 18-34 in age (62 percent interested).

Cadillac Lyriq

Cadillac’s introduction of its electric portfolio begins today with the debut of the LYRIQ show car — a dynamic, modern and fully electric luxury crossover.

The propulsion system and supporting technologies position Cadillac to be a leader in electrification, connectivity and automated driving, all delivered with thrilling performance and a new threshold in technology integration.

“Led by LYRIQ, Cadillac will redefine American luxury over the next decade with a new portfolio of transformative EVs,” said Steve Carlisle, executive vice president and president, GM North America. “We will deliver experiences that engage the senses, anticipate desires and enable our customers to go on extraordinary journeys.”

The LYRIQ is based on GM’s next-generation, modular electric vehicle platform and driven by the Ultium propulsion system, allowing Cadillac to deliver customers a variety of range and performance options. With range being one of the biggest factors when it comes to selecting an EV, we’re designing LYRIQ to offer beyond 300 miles of range on a full charge, based on internal testing1. Performance and technology highlights include:

  • Charging options that fit a variety of preferences for home, the workplace and on the road — including DC fast charging rates over 150 kilowatts and Level 2 charging rates up to 19 kW2
  • Rear-wheel drive and performance all-wheel drive configurations
  • LYRIQ will offer the enhanced version of Super Cruise3, the industry’s first truly hands-free driver assistance feature, available on more than 200,000 miles of enabled roads and recently updated to include lane change on demand
  • New technologies such as dual-plane augmented reality-enhanced head-up display and remote self-parking
  • The brand’s most seamless and adaptive technology interaction with the driver and passengers, including the latest Cadillac user experience, which is showcased in a 33-inch-diagonal advanced LED screen the spans the entire viewing area of the driver

“LYRIQ was conceived to make every journey exhilarating and leverages more than a century of innovation to drive the brand into a new era, while rewarding passengers with a more personal, connected and immersive experience,” said Jamie Brewer, Cadillac LYRIQ chief engineer. “To do this we developed an architecture specifically for EVs.  It is not only an exceptional EV, but first and foremost a Cadillac.”

Tips for Driving in Heavy Rain

Posted on

Typically, in the fall, Southern Maryland tends to experience days of rain, whether due to a hurricane or tropical storm, or just run-of-the-mill weather. Although many new vehicles are well-equipped to drive in different weather conditions, it’s always nice to have a few tips to keep yourself and your family safe while on the road.

  • Install Fresh Windshield Wiper Blades – Make sure your windshield wiper blades are performing at their best. Don’t forget about your rear window Contact our Parts Department to order a new set for your vehicle.
  • Keep a Safe Distance Between Vehicles – Keep a safe distance from the car in front of you while driving. In a heavy rain, hydroplaning may occur. Be sure to leave enough distance for your vehicle to stop suddenly if the vehicle in front of you makes an abrupt stop.
  • Slow Down – The easiest way to avoid hydroplaning in a heavy downpour is to slow down. Leave extra time for you to take your time before arriving to a destination so you’re not speeding.
  • Ensure Your Tires are Safe – Be sure there is enough tread on your tires to give ample traction during a heavy rain. If you’re unsure how to determine whether your tires need replaced, contact our Service Department and let our experts help you.
  • Drive with Headlights On – In accordance with the law in the state of Maryland, you must turn on your headlights if your windshield wipers are running. This not only helps you to be able to see in poor driving conditions, but it helps other cars see you more easily.

  • Change Windshield Wiper Blades & Refill Wiper Fluid – Snow, salt, and sludge on the roadways can be problematic, especially if your windshield wiper blades are old or you’re lacking wiper fluid. Be sure both are ready to go this year.
  • Check Tire Pressure – Make sure all of your tires are inflated to the proper weight. Cooler temperatures often leave your tires slightly on the low side. Check your tires often to ensure they’re inflated properly all winter long.
  • Change Your Oil – With the hussle and bussle of the busy holiday season, often times, preventative maintenance may fall by the wayside. Change your oil ahead of time, to ensure you don’t neglect your vehicle’s health.
  • Replace Your Battery – Your battery might seem fine now, but, when was the last time it was replaced? Batteries should be replaced every couple of years. Make sure a cold winter morning doesn’t leave you stranded this year.
  • Check Your Antifreeze Mixture – Make sure your antifreeze mixture is up to par for the winter months to ensure your engine is operating at the correct temperature.
